“ | Some things only the weak can feel... But weakness does not make them servile. It's because they are weak, that they can develop kindness... and never look down on people. That is where real human interaction comes from.

Lieutenant Elehayym Van Houten (エレハイム・ヴァン・ホーテン, erehaimu van hōten), known as Elhaym in the English localization and given the nickname Elly (エリィ, erii) by her parents, is the deuteragonist and playable character of Xenogears.
Elly is a young skilled officer of the Solaris special forces unit Gebler, and is part of Gebler's Aveh branch. She is the lieutenant of Ignas Army's Third Assault Division and leads a squad.
As a Solarian, Elly is a 1st Class Gazel citizen and lives a very privileged life. Her mother is Medena Van Houten, and her father is Erich Van Houten, who works in the Imperial Guard.
Appearance[]
Elly has long orange hair and indigo eyes.
Her main outfit is a white and black Gebler military uniform with a green gem at the center, brown stockings and white short boots with black linings.
When she was captured by Karellen and Myyah near the end of the game, Elly wears an outfit similar to Myyah's: a white military dress with a light blue trim, black leggings and white boots.
Personality[]
In the beginning of Xenogears, Elly is a loyal Gebler lieutenant. As a 1st class citizen, her knowledge of Solaris is extensive, and she shares a very elaborate residence there with her parents.
In Jugend, Elly was taught that Lambs are inferior, who needed to be tended by 'shepherds' for their own good.[1] In spite of this, she feels guilt over the loss of lives in the Lahan Village incident, and she also feels no insult in having been rescued by Fei, a Lamb. She credits to her father's more open-minded approach to surface dwellers, as well as her seeing similarities in Fei's guilt and her own.[2]
She does have a heart, as she is quick to spare Fei's life upon their first meeting, and even apologizes to him for her blunt words. This was despite her orders to kill any Lambs she comes across, in order to preserve the secrecy of her initial mission. Despite this, and the fact that Fei later saves her, Elly comments that the next time they meet, they will be enemies.
When using the drug known as Drive, her personality turns violent and aggressive, going from wanting to spare Fei's life to wanting him to die, although she claims she will kill him painlessly in return for treating her kindly.
While initially hostile towards Fei, Elly slowly begins to trust him, and later, ends up switching sides to fight with the party against Solaris. During her journey with Fei's group, Elly begins to question her role and purpose in life, her own hypocrisy in dealing with Lambs and the world, and her own insecurities. Added to this is the growing sense of her identity as the Antitype and her growing attachment to Fei.
Elly, like many incarnations of the Antitype before her, eventually falls in love with Fei, and is driven to protect him, even at the cost of her own life.
The Antitype[]
Both Fei and Elly are continuously reincarnated through the Zohar Modifier by the will and power of the Wave Existence. The first Elly had a motherly relationship with the first incarnation of Fei, Abel. However, later reincarnations of Fei and Elly reincarnated around the same time, so they would usually instead become lovers.
In every instance, due to Elly's sacrificial nature, she would die for Fei's sake, resulting in a tendency for Fei to in turn continually torture himself emotionally.[3]
Biography[]
The Contact[]
During a series of tests on the Zohar and the superweapon Deus on Miktam04β, a young boy named Abel made 'contact' with the Wave Existence, a hyper dimensional being that had fallen within the Zohar Modifier.[4]
Through the Zohar, the energy of the Wave Existence flowed into Abel, who became the Contact.[5] Responding to the young boy's "desire to return to the womb"[6], the biological computer Kadomony created the original version of Elehayym.[4] As the core protocol of Persona, Elehayym was the necessary component Kadomony needed to imbue any humans it created with 'human character'.[7]
At some point after this, Deus went out of control, resulting in innumerable causalities. After the military intervened and managed to place Deus in suspended animation at the cost of many more lives, Deus was dismantled into several parts and sealed. The Eldridge was requisitioned for the use of transporting Deus's separated cores, as well as the survivors, including Abel, to another planet for investigation as to what caused the incident.[8]
Later, while near an unnamed planet, Deus managed to activate itself, and used the sealed Zohar to hack into the Eldridge's mainframe. A program called System Hawwa activated, transforming the original Elehayym into her dark-haired counterpart, the original form of Myyah, who would serve as the mother of humanity.[9]
Eldridge captain Shigeyoshi Inoue and a trio of system operators try to stop Deus, but all efforts end in vain.[10] Before Deus assumed complete control over the vessel, the captain initiated the ship's self-destruct system as a last effort, and the Eldridge exploded over an uncharted life-sustaining planet.
The Mother (0000)[]
After the Eldridge's crash, the mother of humanity rose from the wreckage of the Eldridge and used Kadomony to make the first human beings: Cain and the Gazel Ministry.
As this In order to manage these new humans, she gave birth to two replicas of herself to serve as humanity's caretakers: Elly, the Antitype, and the first incarnation of Myyah, the Complement.[11]
Elehayym retained many of the human characteristics derived from Abel, such as the 'Mother's Will'.[12] She would be reborn again and again as the Contact did, always bearing auburn hair and blue-violet eyes.
The Complement version of Myyah, meanwhile, was meant as a manager, bearing the powers of a Deus System weapon and tasked to strengthen and gather all the genetic parts the Deus System Mode needed to repair and reactivate its new body.[6] Instead of being reborn each time she died like Elhayym, she would awaken in another woman's body with all her memories, in order to immediately resume her mission.
The two women would not remain separated forever, as Elehayym was programmed to awaken as the last incarnation of Myyah, and merge with Deus on the Day of Resurrection.[13]
Elehayym and Abel[]
After separating from the original Mother of humanity, Elehayym, or 'Elly' as Abel had come to call her, lived with a seven year old Abel during the first years of human life on the planet.
In E.C. 0010, as Cain begins to be worshiped as the the advent of god among the growing population of humans, Abel stood in opposition to him. While Cain desired and manipulated people towards the goal of resurrecting Deus, Abel wanted people to live according to their own will. The outside influence Abel presented was a hindrance to Cain's plans, so, in 0011, Cain plotted to murder Abel. Elehayym tried to convince Cain to stop, but it all came to a head when one day, as Abel and Elehayym fled, Cain fired at Abel. Elehayym shielded Abel with her body and, with her last words, told Abel to live.[14]

Elehayym Van Houten[]
Elly was born to Medena and Erich Van Houten in 9981 in Solaris.
Despite Elly being a Solarian and the daughter of one of the Empire's most decorated officers, her auburn hair and blue-violet eyes physically separates her from other first class citizens, who were mostly blond-haired and blue-eyed. Elly feels ashamed for not possessing blonde hair, believing she is half-Solarian, half-Lamb.
For a time, Elly thought the woman her father married, Medena, was not her real mother, and that her childhood nanny, a Lamb, was actually her real mother. This fact of her life was a mark of ridicule by some people of Solaris, including Elly's former comrade in the Elements, Dominia Yizkor.
In 9994, Elly joined the Jugend Military Academy and began her officer's training at the age of 13.[15]
In 9998, Elly was given a dose of Drive against her will as part of both an experiment and standard Jugend procedure to test all graduates. When the drugs took affect, her powers as the Antitype temporarily awakened and she lashed out, killing two of her fellow students and injuring three more. She came to, surrounded by blood, causing her significant guilt going forward. This event prevented her from becoming an Element, a position she otherwise qualified for due to her high Ether capabilities.
She would still manage to attain a position as a lieutenant within Gebler.
Xenogears[]
Elly is leading an operation to steal a top-secret experiment Gear called Weltall from Kislev. Fleeing into Aveh airspace, one of her squad's Gears is shot down by the pursing Kislev forces. The shrapnel from the explosion injured her Gear, forcing the squad to land in Lahan Village so they could engage them on the ground.
At some point, Elly went into the Blackmoon Forest, where she became lost. Coming across a similarly lost Fei, she threatens him at gunpoint in Solarian. When he doesn't understand her, she switches to his language instead, telling him to put his hands up. She asks Fei tell him how to get out of the forest, but Fei, being lost himself, is no help. As Elly stands there, Fei tries to provoke her into shooting him. Elly is bewildered by his behavior and backs away, straight into two monsters. When Elly is knocked down, Fei snaps out of his malaise and goes to her aid, yelling her name.
Afterward, the two decide to band together, and properly introduce each other over a campfire. The next morning, Elly asks Fei why he felt his life was worthless. Fei explains what happened in Lahan, as well as his part in its destruction, when the Gear he had found and used to defend Lahan went out of control. Elly realizes she had played a part in Lahan's destruction.
Knowing why the soldiers were there, Elly is annoyed when Fei blames the Kislev soldiers. She argues that Fei needed to take responsibility for piloting Weltall instead of helping villagers escape, since the soldiers were just there for Weltall. Calling him a coward, Elly is silent as Fei has flashbacks to that night. Leaving Fei alone, she walks away, remembering the time she, like Fei, had blood on her hands.
Being alone in the forest, Elly encounters a Rankar. Fei runs after her, but is only able to best it with assistance from Citan Uzuki, who flies in a self-made aircraft carrying Weltall.
The three camp for the night. As Fei sleeps, Citan displays a surprising knowledge of Solarian, questioning Elly's involvement in the Lahan incident. Elly admits that she was the one avoiding blame, as the Lahan incident was also her fault. At Citan's request, Elly leaves them, returning to Solaris.
Elly later encounters Fei again outside her quarters in Bledavik. Hearing an announcement about three intruders, she sees Fei, Bart, and Margie, and helps them escape. She fully introduces herself as part of Gebler, and that she was the reason the soldiers fought in Lahan. Fei begs Elly to come with them, but she refuses, saying that this is were she belonged.
“ | Fei, the next time we meet... we'll be enemies. | ” |
Fei later meets Elly, now piloting the Vierge. In order to be able to fight Fei, she injects herself with Drive, but is unable to defeat him before the drug wears off.
Back in Solaris, Elly and her squad are briefed on her next mission, which is to escort the Hecht. Elly puts together from the amount of firepower they're escorting that something drastic may be underway. She voices to Renk that, unless she has a reason, she "can't go along with this just because it's an order".
Elly grows even more conflicted when she learns from Dominia, the person chosen to pilot the Hecht, that the mission is to attack the power reactor in the eastern sector of Nortune, Kislev, which would destroy most of the country and leave the other half left inhabitable for centuries.
Fei brings Elly's conflict between duty and her beliefs to a head when he pilots Weltall to intercept and grab onto her Gear as she escorts the Hecht. Forcing her to dock the Vierge onto the rooftops of Nortune, he shows her the city on fire, making her to come to grips with the costs of Solaris's actions. Leaving Elly there, Fei rejoins Rico, in order to deal with Dominia themselves.
After Fei and Rico defeat Dominia, the two struggle to change the Hecht's trajectory. Elly suddenly joins them, allowing the three to shift it beyond the initial target. When the impact points towards Nortune's residential district, their Gears overheat, forcing Fei and Rico to let go. Elly, however, refuses to let go, redirecting the ship away from the city and nearly sacrificing herself if not for the efforts of a mysterious sinister-looking winged Gear.
In order to escape the Kislev Empire, Fei's group decides to steal the airplane "Goliath" in the Goliath Factory. They do so, however, Fei and Elly are separated from the rest of the party when the Goliath sinks into the sea after being accidentally shot down by Bart Fatima's ship.
Elly and Fei are rescued by the Thames, a movable floating city ship. After learning Elly's whereabouts, Gebler attempts to kidnap Elly. Myyah Hawwa, a Gebler officer, unsuccessfully brainwashes her. Myyah also calls Elly's eyes "beautiful". Elly eventually returns to the party.
Much later, when they infiltrate Solaris, Elly shows Fei around Etrenank and acts as a language translator for him. She brings Fei to her family mansion in 1st Class Gazel district.
When Erich catches Elly and Fei trying to find information about their friends in his room, he makes a call to the military police, pulls out a gun from his desk, and points it at Fei. Elly protests, even going as far as to protectively step in front of Fei and declaring herself to be a traitor.
As Erich and Elly's argument heats up, Elly says that Erich was less concerned about her safety and more concerned about people seeing her, because she was "half a land dweller". Medena, who was standing in the doorway, gasps, and Erich slaps Elly for her insinuation.
Fei, not wanting Elly to fight with her parents, goes to leave and tells them that this was now a "land dweller problem". Erich, acknowledging his gratitude for Fei protecting Elly, does not stop him from leaving.
Later, Medena visits Elly in her room, and reaffirms her love for her daughter, urging her to go to her loved ones. Erich meets Elly in the hallway outside and hands her an Army Cardkey, telling her to choose her own path.
When Erich hears soldiers arriving, he is surprised by the Imperial Guard, instead of the military police. Stating that the intruder had 'fled', Erich is alarmed to learn that Karellen had ordered Elly be taken into custody. Putting everything on the line, Erich holds back the soldiers to allow Elly to escape.
Rejoining Fei and Citan as they delve into the military sectors of Solaris, they learn the horrifying truth of the Soylent System, as well as discover various party members' genetic data on display. As they go in deeper, they are seemingly betrayed by Citan.
Elly is taken into Karellen's private lab, where she confronts a deranged Kahran Ramsus demanding to know where Fei is. When Fei and the party comes in to help her escape, it is revealed that Citan's betrayal was his means of rescuing the rest of the party.
Regrouping with Elly's parents, Elly and the rest of the party make their way to the hanger. Just as they arrive, Hammer takes Elly hostage. Medena manages to get Elly free, but is fatally shot in the process.
Grahf and the Executioner teleport in and demand Elly remain with them. After the party battles the two, Erich intervenes in a Solarian Eagle soldier gear. The Executioner, amused by his and Medena's devotion to Elly, forces his gear to malfunction.
In his last moments before his gear explodes, Erich urges Elly to go, telling her to believe in herself, and that he and Medena will support her, because she is their daughter, no matter what.
Seeing the death of her father, Elly begins to radiate blue Ether, and the Executioner comments that it is impressive that to have that much Ether control in a "non-awakened state". The Executioner counters with her own release of Ether, overpowering Elly's and knocking her unconscious.
Later, Fei and Elly are chased by Ramsus and are struck down. Mortally wounded, they are rescued by Taura Melchior. After a period of three weeks, Fei and Elly are healed by Taura and his nanotechnology.
When her faith in Solaris is shaken, Elly must find her own path in life and pursue her goals without the backing of her family or Solaris. Everyone regroups and Elly and Emeralda go to the Mass Driver Facility to release the Limiters of everyone on the planet. However, due to a virus Karellan releases at the same time, some turn into Wels.
Back on the surface, Fei and Elly work together to put an end to the Soylent System. The Wels divide themselves into the 'haves' and 'have nots', and some even resort to cannibalism due to their desire for flesh. At one point, Sophia resonates with Elly and comforts the mutated Wels in a Soylent System facility, begging them not to lose the shreds of human dignity they have left. All the people that had been mutated were taken in by Nisan where they received treatment.
Fei's party began to search for Anima Relics, in order to transform their gears into Omnigears. When they locate the Anima Relic for Billy's gear, they encounter the four Elements, there to claim the relic in order to realize Ramsus's ambitions. Elly confronts Dominia, asking if she truly didn't care about the surface dwellers' plight, despite all of the Elements once being surface dwellers and knowing what it felt to be a 'have-not'.
The Elements battle against Elly, Fei, and Billy, both on foot and combined in their Gears, and are defeated. Elly reflects on this, and explains that some things are only felt by the weak, and that weakness does not make them servile, but kind. The Elements' weaknesses drew them together and gave them strength, Elly says, not the superiority they felt over others.[16]
In Nisan, Elly faces Ramsus in his Gear as he attacks, looking for Fei. Ramsus grabs Elly in his Gear's fist and threatens to crush her in order to lure Fei out, but is stopped by Renk. Elly asks Ramsus what happened to him, and learns about his origin from him. She assesses that Ramsus is attacking others in order to confirm his own existence. In order to gain the love he craved, he needed to take it from others.[17]
As the party gains Rico's Anima Relic, they encounter Hammer, now attached directly to his Gear. After he is defeated and falls to his death, Elly feels powerless at being unable to help him. As Fei watches Elly cry, he resolves that he could no longer allow her to fight with them.
Further mutations occur, and the cry of the Wels summon Mahanon. Knowing that this was a battle they may not come back from, Fei goes to Elly, and the two argue. Fei comments that Elly would just be in the way, and Elly cuts the argument short by running off. The party chide Fei for not expressing his true feelings, and encourage him to tell Elly how he feels, before it was too late.
Fei and Elly meet and reconcile, realizing the full extent of their journey together, how they both had grown, and how much they mean to each other. The two kiss, and make love.
In the morning, Elly stays behind and assists Nisan for her own safety. Karellen seeks to possess Elly, the Mother, who must be sacrificed in order to revive Deus. In Nisan, Elly senses that Fei is in danger, which is confirmed when Karellen sends a message, saying that if she wants to save Fei and his group, she must go to Golgoda. Elly does so and defeats Mugwort and Rattan, but is kidnapped by Karellen. Karellen lets Fei and his allies go, knowing they will come back to rescue her.
In Merkava, the party finds Karellen and Myyah waiting for them, as well as an unconscious Elly, bound on a cross in front of Deus's massive form. Karellan explains that Elly, as the Mother, must be sacrificed in order to revive Deus.
Ramsus then appears, questioning his purpose in life, and is taunted by Myyah and Karellen. Ramsus, realizing he had been used, kills her and Karellen. As she collapses, Myyah remarks that, as someone fated to be unable to kill herself, this was the only way she could die. Meanwhile, due to Karellen 's body being mostly composed of nanomachines, he quickly revives.
As Fei frees Elly, he is suddenly shot. As Fei slumps back against Citan, it is revealed that Elly shot Fei, using Billy's gun. As her hair color, facial expression, and speech change, the party realizes that Elly has turned into the next incarnation of Myyah. After revealing the truth about Deus's nature and its coming plans for humanity, the 'Last Myyah' leaves with Karellen and is reabsorbed into Deus, in order to serve as the main protocol to Kadomony.[18]. The party is forced to retreat as Merkava raises into the sky, firing a red beam of destruction on the land below.
Later on, as Fei grapples with Grahf and comes to an understanding of who and what Grahf truly is, Grahf reveals how Elly and Myyah are interconnected, and that even Myyah was beginning to "break free from her bounds" over many generations. As the two women have lived many lives between them and now are one, they now share the memories of several lifetimes of women, including Fei's mother, Karen. In order to free Elly, Myyah, and all the women bound with them, Grahf explains, Fei must "cut the binds on mankind".[19]
Eventually Fei's party manages to destroy Merkava, but Deus's completed form emerges from it. After a long battle in Deus's core, Fei's party defeats Deus.
Searching for signs of Elly, the party discovers a slight energy response within the core, which started to strengthen. The Wave Existence, which was used to power the very biological computers that led to Myyah and Elehaym, was finally freed from its "cage of fleshly existence" from within Zohar. It meant to travel to the higher dimensional it originally came from, which, as Citan revealed would create enough energy to destroy the planet. Elly, now free of Deus's control and in its body, is trying move it beyond the atmosphere, intending to sacrifice herself one last time.
Fei gives pursuit in the Xenogears, the only Gear left operational after the destruction of the Zohar Modifier, disappearing into the rift.
Inside, Karellen confronts Fei, asking why he is so attached to all the imperfections of human existence that he would prefer it over reverting everything back to when it all began, when all was one in the realm of God.[20] Because humans live in an imperfect state that is filled with sadness, Karellen wants to revert everything to the perfect, unified state of waves, filled with the love of god instead of the false love that humans experience.
Fei rejects Karellen's ideology with his love for Elly, but Karellen challenges Fei, telling him to prove this love that could make him independent of God, and summons Urobolus, a gigantic serpent-like incarnation bearing Myyah's visage. Xenogears appears, and Fei uses it to defeat Urobolus.
Karellen releases Elly and reveals to Fei that he had planned to become one with God along with Elly. During her time with Karellen, Elly had seen inside his heart and realized it was full of despair for all the atrocities he had committed, and that he truly loved people. Karellen declines Fei's offer to return and ascends to a higher plane of existence along with the Wave Existence, telling Fei and Elly that he envies them. Fei and Elly then return to their planet along with Xenogears and reunite with the rest of the party.
Gameplay[]
Elly is a competent fighter with her rods, but she has powerful elemental ether, which makes her valuable to the party.
In battles, Elly fights using rods or batons which she knocks her opponent in each hit or sometimes she wielded two rods or two batons when she uses some of her deathblows. She can also somersault her opponents with a single blow or a single kick. When using elemental deathblows, Elly is also capable of using elemental magic. In her Aqua Frost final deathblow, Elly is shown as an excellent ballet when using this ability.
In Gear battles, her Gear Vierge, and her Omnigear, El-Regrs, also wield a rod. However, during her boss battle against Fei due to being drugged by the "Drive", her Gear is not seen wielding a rod. Some of her fighting abilities are used before making a final blow against Fei using Aerods.
Vierge can essentially become overpowered if the player equips her with an Ether Doubler on her human form (use 2x EP to create 2x effect), and Power Magic on her Gear (increases Eth Mach Strength). Her Gear's Aerods then become insanely overpowered. Sometimes, it's enough to one-hit-kill bosses.
Elly leaves the party forever after Anima Dungeon Two is completed - it is recommended the player remove any valuable equipment before the Hammer boss battle.

Etymology[]
The name Elehayym is derived from a reversal of Myyah ele. According to the Perfect Works, this means Myyah exists here, signifying Elly's connection to Myyah, and how the Myyah factor exists within her. [21] Perfect Works does not specify what language the word ele is meant to be from, but it doesn't mean that in Hebrew. An English fan translation of Perfect Works incorrectly claims that the phrase is Myyah ele'm, but this is a typo.
Van Houten is a Dutch surname, literally meaning "from Houten" (a reference to the town of Houten in the Netherlands). The word houten can be Dutch for wooden, wood, or timber.
Guest Appearances & Cameos[]
Elly was a Rare Summon in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius during their first Xenogears collaboration period.
Quotes[]
- "Ranahad! Katenayu tada bintudah akba! Dhan narata! Rana kotay!" (Elly, yelling in Solarian at Fei on their first meeting)
- "You talk as if it's not your responsibility! They died because you had to pilot the Gear and start fighting! Not just anyone can pilot those machines, you know! Why won't you take responsibility!? Why are you trying to put the blame on others? You're a coward!"
- "No... I didn't do anything...! It wasn't me... can't you understand? I didn't do it... I'm not so strong... I'm not even all that talented..." (Elly remembering her Drive incident)
- "Why? It's obvious. It's divine providence! We are the chosen people, the Abel... Our purpose of existence is to subordinate the earth dwelling 'Lambs'. Those who stand in our way must be eliminated! This is my true nature! There is no other!" (using Drive)
- "Sorry I'm so edgy."
- "It's OK not to feel ‘whole’. Even if you only feel partly complete, if you repeat that enough, eventually it’ll be 'whole'. A part... is better than zero." (to Fei)
- "Don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone wants to be needed at times. All of us want to give something inside ourselves to others to be accepted."
- "Dreams... A life of a woman named Sophia... And the lives of countless other women... All but dreams... Now that I am awake, those countless numbers of long, heartrending dreams are almost impossible to remember at all... In those dreams, I loved one man... no matter the day, No matter the era... That did not change... Only his name..."
- "All of you, want to be loved... needed by someone, so we look to others... By ourselves, we are lonely, so we try to draw together to live... That's what it means to be human...That's how people live. A single hand cannot clap."
- "I only did what I could. Maybe I'm a hypocrite. A well to do 'have'. Maybe it's only pity for the 'have-nots'... But if I can know the joy of giving out a little of the life within me... Then maybe someday it may just be possible that one human can truly give love to another... People can do it... I truly believe they can."
- "In the beginning... I think I saw myself in you. We seemed to overlap... You being in a similar situation as I was in. When I was with you, I didn't feel alone or apprehensive. That's why I thought I liked you... But it wasn't that. I simply didn't have the courage to look at my true self. I turned to you to run away from it all... I mistook that for love. But, it's different now. I can face my own problems. I am me... and you are you. It has all become clear to me now. I also learned that I really do need you... It's not because I need you as a sanctuary for my problems. I need you because I truly love you." (to Fei)
- "Everyone wants someone special waiting for them. Someone who will protect a place they can return to. If you don't have that peace of mind, then you would not be able to get anything done... Men try to fight it out as much as they can and then some... They're cute when they do that, aren't they?"
- "I'm not a holy woman of any sort. I'm just a regular woman. I get angry... I cry... I laugh... Although at times I can resent others, I also know how to love others... Loving whole masses of people at times... and loving just one person the rest of the time... I am in supreme bliss when I am embraced by the man that I love. Giving what I have to him, and receiving what he gives to me, we become one flesh... That is the moment when I am most at peace. It is my prerogative as a woman to simply want to save the man that I love!" (to her squad)
- "Everyone has weaknesses. Even you did at first. Your weakness drew you to each other... And made you grow strong. Never forget those feelings. When you all lived together side by side..." (To the Elements)
- "That Miang over there and I are the same existence. We are all parts for Deus... All caretakers of humans. Let's end this discussion now. Deus has been awakened. I am one of the parts that composes Deus. Hence, I must become one with it." (After Myyah awakens in her)
- "I'm so sorry... so please forgive me! I was wrong... I thought sacrificing myself in order to save others was the right thing to do... But my actions only brought sadness to all the people who I left behind. And that sadness gave birth to even more sadness. As long as 'I' still live within you, my life is not just mine alone."
- "If we're together, I can."
Trivia[]
- In the introduction of the game, when Shigeyoshi Inoue looks at a photo of his apparent family, the girl in it strongly resembles Elly. However, it has never been confirmed that this resemblance was intentional.
- When Elly tries to access Erich's computer, she first guesses the password to be her full name, Elehayym ("E L H A Y M" in the NA release). When that fails, she tries her name backwards, "Myyahele", which ends up being the actual password. This may be a small clue to how Myyah and Elly are connected, though it would have been lost in the NA release, where Myyah is named Miang.
- Elly is the only party member who retains her Japanese battle cries in the English version of Xenogears.
- When Elly talks about her and Fei becoming "one flesh", this is likely a an echo to Genesis 2:24.
- Elly has a strong resemblance to Nephilim Verum in Xenosaga, as well as has a similar relationship with Abel. In the Japanese versions of both games, Nephilim and Elly share the same voice actor.
- Her English voice actress, Moira Quirk, portrayed a referee in Nickelodeon's Guts, and was the English voice actor for Daniella from Haunting Ground.

- ↑ CITAN
"Exactly. Yet you seem to feel responsibility toward Fei and the villagers. Why is that?" ELLY "I don't know myself... At Jugend I was taught that surface dwellers were stupid and base... ... And that is why we have to control them... But..." - ↑ CITAN: "Most of your people would feel ashamed at receiving such an act. Yet, you are grateful to Fei...?" ELLY: "It's probably because of my father. He had an open mind to surface dwellers. My nanny was... a surface dweller. No one knew about her though... Besides... I am the same as Fei..."

- ↑ ELLY: "Some things only the weak can feel... But weakness does not make them servile. It's because they are weak, that they can develop kindness... and never look down on people. That is where real human interaction comes from. Everyone has weaknesses. Even you did at first. Your weakness drew you to each other... And made you grow strong. Never forget those feelings. When you all lived together side by side..."
- ↑ ELLY: Ramsus was in fear. He feared losing the place he belonged to... He feared that Fei was the one who would take it away from him... He believed love was something you take... He craved love more than anyone else...

- ↑ GRAHF: "As you said, that was Karen. Through many generations, Miang is beginning to break free from her bounds. Now that Elhaym has merged with Deus, she has all of her memories back. All the memories from her original birth as the Contact's complement up to her current transmigration. That includes all of the lives she has lived as Miang, and her substitutes, over the centuries. And of course, that includes your mother's memories too." FEI: "Mother's memories...?" GRAHF: "Fei, cut away all the binds on mankind... You should be able to do that now. Save her and all the other women bound with her!"
- ↑ KRELIAN: How can you be so sure? Humans will never come to understand each other. You said that she is the person you love. But can you say that you even truly understand each other? All humans do is place themselves at a comfortable distance from each other and call that 'mutual understanding', 'spiritual unity', or 'true love'... but it is all lies! Man cannot associate with others without first deceiving themselves. That is the way that they were created. FEI: But one being's ego can't determine everyone's fate! People have the right to choose their own destiny! That is why humans have free will! KRELIAN: And what if that 'will' itself was predetermined? What then? Oh, what folly!? Humans are just primitive life forms that have no such things as free will... Mankind has merely been allowed to live in an imperfect state... "as is", "as will be"... It is for this very reason... because humans have this wretched 'will' or whatnot... that humans must experience sadness and loss. For someone to gain something means another must lose it... It is impossible to make humankind share limited "things" and "affections"... So I came to the conclusion that everything must be reverted back to where it all began. To go back to when all was one... waves, and nothing else... It is not my -Human's- ego... It is the will of the 'Waves'... the will of -god-...
