Human beings... all life throughout the universe must be guided forward by Ormus and the Zohar. And they shall be led unto a higher plane of existence. That is the mission that God has entrusted to us.
—Sergius to Shion Uzuki.

Sergius XVII, known as the Patriarch and Pope, is a major antagonist in the first two parts of the Xenosaga trilogy. He is the leader of the Immigrant Fleet and ultimately the pope of the Ormus religion, both introduced in Episode II.

Xenosaga I & II introduces Sergius earlier than in Episode I.

Personality[]

Book

Sergius reading the Bible.

Like Margulis, Sergius is strong-willed, arrogant, and displays a cold nobility towards anyone he feels is below him.

Sergius is obsessed with obtaining the Zohar for ultimate power, as well as the means to destroy the Gnosis. He also exhibits hostility toward the Galaxy Federation, and is not hesitant to start war or use force if needed.

Sergius appears as a skilled manipulator, and will use whatever is needed to reach his purpose. He seems to be highly respected by anyone in Ormus, at the exception of Margulis, who doesn't hesitate to call him an old fool.

Background[]

Pre-Xenosaga[]

Little is known about how he became Patriarch, except that he reigned after the Patriarchs Julius XVIII and Sergius XIV.

At some point in the past, Sergius also knew Dmitri Yuriev, yet disliked him and his vulgarity. Because of this, he saw Albedo Piazzolla as "Yuriev's ghost", as he, too, possesses a similar personality.

Miltian Conflict[]

Sergius was directing and in control of the U-TIC Organization, and gave the orders to do the Zohar Experiment using Cecily and Cathe, even though Margulis seemed to already take his order from the Cardinal Heinlein.

Xenosaga I & II[]

Serg

The Patriarch in Xenosaga I & II

Sergius appears in the Episode I part of Xenosaga I & II, during U-TIC's attempt to frame the Kukai Foundation for the destruction of the Woglinde. Acting as the representative for the Immigrant Fleet, Sergius addresses the Executive Committee on Fifth Jerusalem in the place of the random U-TIC affiliated representative seen in Episode I.

Sergius's motives are to use the government to acquire not only MOMO but the Foundation's twelve Zohar Emulators. He argues with Pierre Ruryk over who should have control of the Zohar Emulators.

Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse[]

Sergius attempts to convince the Federation that the proof given by Vector Industries of the Kukai Foundation's innocence in the destruction of the Woglinde was fake. He also says that the innocence of the Second Miltia's government was also fake.

Adding to this, Sergius uses Ormus and its dummy corporations and contacts, including U-TIC and Albedo Piazzolla to unlock Old Miltia and retrieve the Original Zohar and Proto Omega.

Sergius appears in Labyrinthos on Old Miltia.

In Labyrinthos on Miltia, Sergius appears to Shion Uzuki and her group, revealing his motives to use the Zohar to take control of the galaxy and place it under the jurisdiction of Ormus. Sergius claims that Cecily and Cathe are "tools created specifically for that purpose" of an experiment that would lead humanity to a higher plane of existence using the Zohar. Angered by Cecily and Cathe's roles as guinea pigs, Shion tells Sergius to shut up, and she refuses to accept this.

Sergius activates the U-DO system and, using the Omega System, he destroys Old Miltia and threatens to destroy the Federation. However, his subordinates, namely Margulis, Sellers, and Heinlein, had other plans: they wanted to take control over Ormus for their own motives. Margulis says then to Sergius XVII that he has only one master, and he'll understand when Heinlein tries to take Sergius's place.

Margulis betrays Sergius in favor of Heinlein.

When KOS-MOS and the others infiltrate the Omega System, they reach the middle of it where Sergius is waiting with Proto Omega. Albedo appears, wanting to take the Zohar for himself, and attempts to attack Sergius, who summons Proto Omega and seemingly annihilates him in one attack.

Sergius XVII, killed by the Testaments.

After the team defeat the Patriarch in a fight, Sergius summons the power of Proto Omega once more in order destroy them. However, when Sergius summons Proto Omega, the Testaments appear and stop Omega from working, and then kill Sergius XVII. As he dies, Sergius's final words are, "I am all power!"

With the death of Sergius, Cardinal Heinlein becomes the new leader of Ormus.

Relationships[]

Margulis[]

Margulis was maybe the person in which Sergius trusted most, with Orgulla and Heinlein. Both Margulis and Heinlein end up to betraying him. Sergius apparently respects Margulis, though it was clear that he considered him as a subordinate, even if the two of them shared some common points of view.

Margulis, however, did not reciprocate Sergius's feelings towards him: while he behaved deferently toward the Patriarch in his presence, he privately despised and derided him, described him as weak, old and mad. His actual allegiance was towards Heinlein and the two successfully conspired together to eliminate Sergius and replacing him with Heinlein himself.

Heinlein[]

Heinlein was a powerful Cardinal of Ormus and, thus, a theoretical subordinate of Sergius. However, the Patriarch had doubts over Heinlein's loyalty and questioned Margulis over the prelate's actions, not knowing that Margulis was also working for Heinlein. Sergius's doubts eventually proved to be well-founded, as the Cardinal eventually conspired with the Inquisitors and successfully eliminated the Patriarch, replacing him as the new leader of Ormus.

Orgulla[]

Orgulla works for Ormus and was highly placed in the organization, commanding the Ormus Stronghold. She is extremely loyal to Sergius.
