Is there actually an english mention of the Ooki Tribe? Or was mention of them only in PW and the romanization of "ooki" was from the PW translation by UltimateGraphics? I've been wondering this, as its "ウーキィー" or "uーkiー" (common romanization for ー after vowel sounds being "uukii"; still pronounced the same as how you'd say "ooki" in english, but I was curious as to the official english spelling, if there is any at all.) - You actually stumbled across one of the reasons that damn chuchu article has been sitting on my desktop so long. That and where chuchus came from, since popular belief is they're native to the planet, but the timeline says they're experiments from the Zeboim era. There's two other translations hosted on GameFAQs but I'll need to check if they translated those pages. Tanyuu (talk) 20:23, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
- I think it's a Star Wars joke. Elendraug (talk) 04:24, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Now that I have a brain cell to spare, one of the other, uh, mysteries is in the script itself: in one scene, Chuchu's species is referred to as Dotesque Chu-Chupolin. It's one of those references that only appears in the game itself, but nowhere else. A friend of mine poked at the original script a way's back, but it seems to be reflected in the Japanese too, more or less.
- Dotesque has a potential Latin(?) root going on with it that I can't sort out with my lack of knowledge, and it felt like I was spending waaay too much time on a wild goose chase. Tanyuu (talk) 23:23, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- Linnaealyn helped me find it in the Japanese script! The line is 「学術名ドテスカチュチュポリン(知能レベル、天文学的に低い)か!」and I'm asking my friends if it's a pun I'm just not getting because I'm not a native speaker. I'll report back. I also found a GameFAQs thread from like ten years ago asking about this; we're not the first to wonder. The Study Guide also refers to that page, and a Japanese fansite quotes the line. Elendraug (talk) 00:34, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- yes, let us find answers to the mysteries of Chuchu. Or shall we call it the mys-chu-- no, i'm stopping myself there, we got enough reasons to get featured in twitter hottakes. Tanyuu (talk) 01:01, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- looked into this more a while back but didnt say anything bc I wasnt sure if it really lead to anything substantial but I suppose I'll add this anyway, who knows. So I started searching sections of the name and was curious about the "-polin"/"-ポリン" part. Here- https://jisho.org/search/%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3 & by extension, https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3_(%E3%82%BF%E3%83%B3%E3%83%91%E3%82%AF%E8%B3%AA Was thinking it might have something to do with the fact that they were created from the experiments in the Zeboim era. - Sorry for the delay, forgot to reply! Isn't 'Porin' an example of Japanese onomatopoeia for nibbling? .... nevermind, just looked that up, it's 'pori'.Tanyuu (talk) 02:56, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
