This article is being rewritten to current wiki standards.

The following is a timeline for Xenogears, adapted from the game's script and other sources, such as UltimateGraphics' and tsbnovil's translations of Perfect Works.

Due to much of this being from unofficially translated sources, there will be errors, and it should not be taken word for word. Also, many events that aren't listed in Perfect Works' timeline in the beginning do not come with clear dates. Citations and notes are added for unclear dates, clarifications, and contradictions to help with future corrections.

While there are many similarities between the two, please do not put events from Xenosaga here, as it is a separate timeline.

Anno Domini Era[]

A.D. 2001[]

[Note 1]

Zohar2

The Zohar.

  • As humanity enters the beginning of the third Millenium, anxieties lift after a prediction left by a "rare prophet" that "the Messiah would appear at the end" did not come to pass.[1]
  • On Earth, a mysterious object is unearthed from stratum that was approximately 3.9 billion years old. Despite this, the object has an artificial appearance, including the shape of an eye.
    • Borrowing from the panspermia hypothesis, a research institution puts forth the hypothesis that the object may have been the origin of life, leading to more debate.
  • The object is carbon-dated as over 15 billion years old, meaning it had been present at the birth of the universe, leading to a new wave of theories, which wondered at its source.
  • Due to its strong magnetic properties, it was given the name MAM ("Magnetic Abnormal Matter").
  • Research on MAM is conducted on a national level until problems arose with budgets, halting any progress.
    • One group of voluntary researchers privately continues their research of MAM, eventually giving it another name: the Zohar.

A.D. 2510[]

  • The Space Emigration Project begins, with the goal of emigrating humanity into space. The newly founded Executive Committee aims to complete the project in fifteen years.[1]
  • T.C. (Transcend Christ) is adopted, and the length of a year is shifted to 365 days.

Transcend Christ Era (New Era)[]

T.C. 0016[]

  • After sixteen years of development, a fleet of immigrant ships depart Earth.
  • Afterward, for unknown reasons, Earth becomes a "forbidden land" and is re-named "Lost Jerusalem."[1][2][Note 2]

T.C. 0294[]

  • The Immigrant Fleet reach the M24 Sagittarius Constellation. They eventually settle a new planet and name it Neo Jerusalem.

T.C. 0295[]

  • The National Institute and the Emigrant Management Committee are reorganized to become the Star Cluster Federation.
    • The first President of the Federation is elected.
    • Neo Jerusalem is established as the new starting point for humanity as they continue their journey through space.

T.C. 47xx?[Note 3][]

  • Numerous interstellar nations band together to form the Galactic Federation, which is overseen by a central governing body called the Directorate.[2]
  • Frontier skirmishes, ethnic conflicts, and widespread space pirate attacks lead to an outbreak of interstellar war.[2]

T.C. 4743[]

  • Due to the efforts of a group of archaeologists, MAM is rediscovered in a storage room of a ship belonging to the Pilgrimage Fleet, a wandering religious sect.[3]

T.C. 4744[]

  • Analysis of MAM resumes.[3]

T.C. 4750[]

T.C. 4751[]

  • The main research group supervising MAM research commence Project Zohar, which centers around using MAM to prove and master the theory of phenomenon phase shift.[3]

T.C. 4752[]

  • Interstellar strife intensifies.[2]

T.C. 4765[]

  • Due to an unknown accident, the planet that is hosting Project Zohar is completely annihilated.
    • MAM is found nearby floating in space and recovered.[2]

T.C. 4766[]

  • Kadomony is installed directly into MAM's eye, nearly completing work on the Zohar.[4]
    • The nature of Kadonomy's inner workings, having been produced by an "over-technology",[Note 4] is unknown.[4]
    • Having been constructed to be contained within the Zohar, Kadonomy is surmised to be made of the same material.[5]
  • In order to stop interstellar war as it appears to reach its climax, System Deus is completed.[6]
    • The Zohar is installed as Deus's main power source, with Kadonomy serving as the Deus system's control.[7][3][5]

T.C. 4767[]

ZoharEye

Abel sees the Original Elhaym.

  • Three months after the Zohar is made Deus' main power source, a series of experiments are conducted to test the connection between the Zohar and Deus on a space station orbiting the planet Miktam04β, which was undergoing terraforming.[3][2]
    • During the tests, the Zohar begins to examine "infinite potential phenomena".
      • Requiring more power, the Zohar connects to a higher dimensional space and, in the process, 'synchronizes' with the Wave Existence.[8]
        • Falling through the Path of Sephirot to a four-dimensional world, the Wave Existence is forced to materialize itself within the Zohar, becoming bound to it.
      • Now trapped in the Zohar, the Wave Existence makes contact with a young boy named Abel, who was there for unknown reasons.
        • Abel's "desire to return to his mother" is passed on to the Wave Existence, who embodies these human traits as "the mother's will".[9][10]
        • Wanting to escape its "'cage of fleshly existence'", the Wave Existence realizes it needs to be released by Abel, since he was the one who gave it a 'will'.[11]
      • The Wave Existence is split into the three parts: will, power, and body.[12]
        • Its will is incarnated through a newly evolved Kadomony, becoming the original version of Elhaym, as well as an embodiment of the Persona, Kadomony's central element.[13][14][5][15]
        • Its power is channeled through the Zohar into Abel, enabling him to be reborn over and over again as the Contact until the Wave Existence is freed from the Zohar.[16][17]
        • Its body stays trapped in the Zohar.
  • At some point, Deus goes out of control and invades the surrounding colonies, resulting in innumerable causalities. The military manages to place Deus in suspended animation, but at a great cost.
  • All three core components (Kadamony, Zohar, and Deus) are individually disassembled and sealed off from one another.
  • In order to investigate what caused the accident, the private vessel Eldridge is requisitioned by the military to transport the cores, as well as the 1.2 million survivors, to another planet far away.
    • Shigeyoshi Inoue is made the Eldridge's captain.
    • Abel is one of the survivors that boards the Eldridge.[16]

Xenogears Intro

The Eldridge crash.

  • At an unknown point, Deus, referred to as 'Omega 1', unexpectedly activates inflight.
    • Kadomony's Persona, which is referred to as 'Alpha 1', is activated.[2]
      • An operator confirms an "exon replacement", which marks Kadonomy's shift to "Deus Control Mode".[13][18][19][Note 5]
    • The bridge crew tries to contain Deus with different methods, but Deus gains control.
    • Deus hacks into Razael, the Eldridge's mainframe. 98% of of the Eldridge's weaponry falls under its control.[20] Ship machinery begins to act like like living creatures, attacking passengers and crew.[6]
      • After activating space displacement mode, Deus plots a course to Lost Jerusalem.[3][2]
    • Captain Inoue calls the engine room to order the activation of the emergency sealing system, but the engine room is already overtaken.
    • Deus fills the monitor screens in the bridge with the repeating text: "You shall be as gods."
    • Realizing that the ship was a loss, Captain Inoue orders all crew and passengers to evacuate.
      • The ship's weapon systems shoot down departing spacecraft.
  • As a last effort to stop Deus, Captain Inoue uses a manual override to activate the bolts of the Spinal Shaft system holding the Eldridge's sections together, effectively dismantling the ship and sealing its fate.
    • The ship is taken out of space displacement mode as it becomes unable to maintain mass balance.
  • Eldridge p9

    The Eldridge.

The Eldridge begins to break up as it is caught in the gravity of a nearby planet. Only blocks with emergency navigational ability are able to survive the landing intact.
    • The Babel block of the front hull later becomes known as Babel Tower.[3]
    • The 2nd block of the front hull, a large scale plant, later gets used as a part of Shevat.
    • Unspecified remnants are later used to construct the first base of Solaris.[21]
    • The central block, containing Deus' physical body, as well as Raziel, fall into the ocean.
      • This area eventually becomes known by the central block's name: Mahanon, and would later be blocked off by the Gazel Ministry using Gate technology.
    • Kadomony separates itself from the Zohar's main body and lands on a nearby coast. Despite a successful landing, a section of its essential parts, the Anima Relics, are scattered across the globe.
    • Several vessels aboard the ship are later excavated by future civilizations, such as the Excalibur (No. 1), Excalibur (No. 2), and the Land Cruiser that would eventually be incorporated into the Yggdrasil IV.
  • The only known survivor of the Eldridge is Abel, who survived due to being the Contact.[22]

Mother

The mother of humanity arises naked from the wreckage.

8-heymom14

The mother of humanity's remains resting in the supercomputer Kadomony.

  • System HAWWA activates, transforming Elhaym into the mother of humanity, also called 'Original Myyah'. Stepping from Kadomony, she begins the first steps to resurrect Deus.[2][23][5]
  • The mother of humanity, in order to follow the two conflicting objectives within her, creates the first incarnations of Elhaym and Myyah.[28][23] She then lays her body to rest inside Kadomony.[26]
    • Elhaym, known as the Antitype, inherits the will of the 'Mother' and would be born the same time as the Contact, after which she would seek him out.[13][14]
    • Myyah Hawwa inherits the role of the "Weapon", focusing on shaping humanity to become parts for Deus by any means necessary.[29]
      • Instead of being reincarnated with a new body like Elhaym, Myyah would 'awaken' in another female host each time she died.[19]
    • The last incarnation of Elhaym would awaken as the last host of Myyah on the day of resurrection and merge with Deus, as the two of them would be needed to complete its final form.[19]
  • Xenogears_-_Lonely

    Xenogears - Lonely

    Abel and Elhaym meet.

A newly created Elhaym finds a seven year old Abel, and the two develop a relationship of mother and child.[19]
  • Cain and the Gazel Ministry use Kadomony to mass produce a prototype of humanity. The population expands at a massive rate, then slows.[2]

0010[]

  • In order to control the growing population and shape them for Deus's resurrection in the future, Cain and Myyah encourage the belief and eventual worship of Cain being an advent of god.[2][30]
  • Abel spreads an opposing philosophy of free will. This, combined with Elhaym's presence and influence, presents an outside threat to Cain's goals.[2][27]

0011[]

Abel y elly 3jpg

Elly dies while protecting Abel.

  • Cain carries out his plan to kill Abel.
    • Elhaym attempts to admonish and persuade Cain in order to save Abel's life, but Cain counteracts her plan.[27][31]
    • As Abel and Elhaym flee from Cain, Elly uses her body to shield Abel from Cain's attack. She tells Abel to live before she passes away in his arms.[22][27][2]
      • Myyah silently observes and does not intervene.
      • Abel's final fate is unclear.[23]
      • Due to this event, Cain's views on the fate of humanity begin to shift.

0012-5999[]

  • At two unknown points of time, Myyah "resets" humanity for unstated reasons.[32]
  • Worship of Cain slowly expands over time.[21]
    • Cain and the others use remnants of the Eldridge to construct a base of operations, creating the first version of what would become the Holy Empire Solaris several centuries later.[21]
      • This base is used for research on humans and reforming them, in order to prepare for Deus' revival.

    • Over time, those who originally agreed with Sophia join the Alliance, overriding her decision.[52]
  • Lacan meets Roni and Rene, who are now chiefs of a caravan group that previously traded with surface powers. Together they form a partnership for the Alliance called the Supply Corps, which is tasked with supplying weapons and materials.[51][50][52]

9497-9499[]

  • Over time, the Supply Corps's partnerships with the surface military strengthen it to become a mobile Corp in its own right, with a military might comparable to Nisan's Monastery Corps.[50][52][Note 19]
  • Jacquelinde meets and forms a close bond with Rene.[49]
  • Karellen begins studying under Melchior at an unknown point in time, becoming one of his best students (at least, according to Karellen himself[53]).[45][Note 7]
  • Cain, feeling that humanity should be entrusted with their own future, removes himself from the forefront, leaving both Myyah and the Gazel Ministry to manage governing Solaris themselves.[52][Note 19]
    • As a consequence of Cain's absence, Myyah's governing power over Solaris is on par with Gazel Ministry's, making her the "hidden ruler" of Solaris.[52][54]
  • At some point, four members of the Gazel Ministry align with their own Anima Relic, becoming more powerful.[Note 20]
  • The Shevat Elders' agenda shifts from initially wanting the surface's freedom from Solaris, to wanting to rule the surface themselves.[51][52][Note 21]

Editors' Notes[]

  1. 西暦 "seireki" is used here, meaning "Western Calendar", or AD/CE. AD is chosen here due to TC being used later.
  2. While Perfect Works says the reason is unknown, it does rule out any sudden environmental changes.
  3. PW says "Approximately 5000 years", but it doesn't seem to be meant in a literal sense.
  4. Macross reference, referring to technology that's beyond human understanding.
  5. Due to a lack of subtitles during animated cutscenes, it's unclear what specific words are said.
  6. This is a rough estimate based on Big Joe's age, which contradicts the timeline later on since Billy's Orphanage wasn't around yet when Big Joe was revived.
  7. 7.00 7.01 7.02 7.03 7.04 7.05 7.06 7.07 7.08 7.09 7.10 This event is not given an exact year in the game or in Perfect Works, so it may be incorrect.
  8. PW uses the phrase 'approximately 4000 years' which contradicts the timeline, so it's not being taken literally.
  9. 'She/her' is used for Adoriel solely on the usage of '教母' later in the paragraph, which is the same title given to Margie.
  10. Aside from PW using the phrase "835 years ago", no real timeline is set for the progression of Solaris' plans up until the start of the Solaris War.
  11. Since the paragraph on pg. 20 doesn't list exact years, the timeline at the top of the page is being used instead.
  12. Melchior's actual age and date of birth are never noted.
  13. PW pg. 193 notes Gaspar was 560 when his son was born, but since his son's age is never said, this is a rough estimate.
  14. The only estimate of Balthasar's age is that he's "lived for 500 years" and that he participated in the Solaris War.
  15. 15.0 15.1 PW pg. 14 says that this happened in 9483, but pg. 165 says it was when she was 13, which would make the date 9488.
  16. Zephyr says she's 522 years old in-game, but PW lists her being born in 9486 and that she was 13 when she met Sophia, so the timeline is using PW instead.
  17. The timing is vague on pg. 20, so I'm assuming that Solaris started its major invasions in 9496.
  18. 18.0 18.1 PW pg. 15 says the Soylent facilities were built in 9499, but pg. 20 implies their existence is what made people rebel in the first place.
  19. 19.0 19.1 19.2 19.3 Pg. 23's charts are unclear when these events happen and in what order, so the timing of these are loose guesses based on context.
  20. It's never stated when any the four members aligned with their Anima Relic, so these events could have happened before or during the War.
  21. The timing of this shift is unclear; pg. 15 insinuates the Elders always wanted to rule the surface, while pg. 23 says their attitudes shifted during the war.
  22. Pg. 22 charts this as happening at the midpoint of the war, while pg. 23 says it happened at the end.
  23. Perfect Works doesn't state what the hostile power specifically is, just that Myyah is thinking about Deus's resurrection, while the Ministry is thinking about what will happen afterwards.
  24. UG's Perfect Works translation makes a small error here: the trade between Gazel and Shevat and the Sophia's death are two separate sentences. The trade didn't call for Sophia's death but for Sophia herself.
  25. One PW translation says "less than 1%"; 1割 means literally "1 one-tenth", or "10%". "全人口が1割以下に減少し" > "total population decreased to no more than 10%".

  7. Wave Existence: Long ago, a 'modifier', or a pseudo-perpetual, infinite-energy engine was created. That engine was named 'Zohar'. That reactor was created by an ancient people from another planet to attain what is considered to be the ultimate energy possible within this four-dimensional universe. Eventually, those people used that same engine to create the inter-planetary invasion weapon, 'Deus'... Zohar was used as its primary source of power.
  8. WAVE EXISTENCE: "During the connection tests of Zohar with the newly completed Deus, the engine started to examine infinite potential phenomena... Requiring energy, the engine connected this dimension to the higher dimensional space. As a result, that reactor 'merged' or 'synchronized' with the wave existence in that higher dimension... ME. I 'descended' from the point of contact created by the machine through the 'Path of Sephirot', or the domain you are in right now, and incarnated in the four-dimensional world. After I 'advented' to the four-dimensional world, in order to stabilize myself here, I had to exchange, or materialize, my form and enter into the 'modifier' engine... In other words, I became bound in 'Zohar'... the 'cage of fleshly existence'."
  9. WAVE EXISTENCE: "Yes. I was given a special attribute of a human by you, the Contact, when you observed me... I was given... a mother's will."
  10. WAVE EXISTENCE: "As a contact, being but only a child, you defined my existence with your desire to return to your mother. Thus I came to prepare the mother's will... That will is Elhaym."
  11. HAR: "Since the time I was bound in Zohar, I have always wanted to return to my own dimension... And I came to a conclusion. I had to reverse the process I went through to arrive here. I must be released by the one who instilled within me a special feature of this dimension - the 'will'... That one is you."
  12. WAVE EXISTENCE: "I was split by your contact. My physical form or flesh stayed in Zohar, while my will went into Elhaym and my power went into you."

We'd have won if we had better equipment... That child would have been saved if there was electricity... It's not just that child. Five people died in my hospital. The ICU didn't function..."
  36. ELLY: "I had a physical at the hospital today... They said I can't have children because of hereditary genetic damage."

  58. KRELIAN: Something I borrowed from Melchior. It's about a form of molecular engineering... nanotechnology. I believe it's a book found in the ancient ruins of the Zeboim civilization. It's a copy of someone's research report, but it's incomplete. I think there were even more wonderful things written in it, but we'll never know now...
  59. KRELIAN: "Lacan, look at this. I finally completed it. This will save people's lives. Isn't that right, Melchior? With this even Sophia will..."
  60. TAURA: "It's called a Nanoreactor. It is a device that can rebuild substances at the molecular level. Not only can it just heal humans, but theoretically it should also be able to create many substances."
  61. ZEPHYR: "Fearing the increasing power of the masses assembling in Nisan, the Gazel Ministry schemed to hand over to us their antagonist, Miang, and promised a division of the rulership over the earth's surface. But in exchange... We had to give them the rebel army that had assembled in Nisan and also their patron, Sophia..."
  62. ZEPHYR: "The leaders of Shevat accepted... ... and it was decided that Nisan would be the location of the final decisive battle with Solaris."
  63. ZEPHYR: "Krelian, who followed closely under her as the leader of the Nisan sect's militia, completely lost faith after calling out to a god that would not respond. "I will create god with my own hands!" ... were the last words he uttered before he disappeared."
  64. ZEPHYR: "And Lacan... He resented himself for not having the power to do anything while she died in front of him... ... So he began to search for the 'Legendary Power'."

  67. CITAN: "Yes, but the real intentions of the 'Ethos' are quite obvious... The fact that they are not reporting the results, let alone the site's very existence, gives it away... The 'Ethos' is planning to revolt by monopolizing this ultra-advanced civilization's resources!"
  68. CAPTAIN: . . . Recently, however, there has been almost no treasure... just little things. Since we started the big job, well, that's all we've had. . . . Oh, that's a job for the 'Ethos'. The 'Ethos' is planning a really big salvage next. I don't know the details but, looks like we'll be searching for some buried treasure. . . . But, we're dependant on the 'Ethos' to buy our stuff. So, it won't look good if we turn the job down.
