Wels (ウェルス, Uerusu), also known as Reapers, are mutated humans in Xenogears. They are intended to be used as the fleshy material to form Deus. Wels are often created in secret laboratories, such as Karellen's Lab, or in the many Soylent Systems.

Xenogears[]

In Disc 1, it is revealed that the Etones, an order within the Ethos church, kill Wels in the belief that in doing so, they are saving them. This includes Billy Lee Black. Later, Isaac Stone reveals this is merely a control system for Solaris, and that the Wels are humans mutated into monsters by Solaris.

At the start of Disc 2, Elly Van Houten and Emeralda go to the Mass Driver Facility to release the Limiters of everyone on the planet. During this time Karellen activates a virus in tandem which changes some people into Wels, making the party think it was the release of the limiters that changed them.

Unlike Karellen, the Gazel Ministry believed they could not use these Wels for Deus, as the Wels were incomplete. For this issue, the Ministry created the M Plan.

The M Plan[]

Due to the pain of their sudden changes, Wels were driven to attack and devour untransformed humans for their flesh and blood, which eased the Wels' pain and allowed them to extend their shortened lives.

The Wels were innately compelled to gather at Soylent Facilities, believing they would be saved from their agony. It was not long before the Wels resorted to attacking those that were less mutated at these facilities until only a few remained.

In reality, these facilities were using the gathering Wels as molecular material in order to create a more perfect complete lifeform that could be used as a weapon.

The End of the Soylent System[]

Fei Fong Wong and his allies go to destroy the Soylent Systems scattered around the planet. In the first one they enter, they encounter a queue of mutated humans. The people in the line argue that Fei, Elly, and Citan, who hadn't transformed, were 'haves', and should share their flesh and blood with them, the 'have nots'. Elly questions herself whether she, as a 'have', could understand the pain of a 'have not', and considers the lengths she'd go to in order to do so.

Elly slits her palms for a 'have not' Sufal.

A Sufal Mass breaks from one of the amalgamation devices and begins devouring the mutated humans in line, forcing Fei and his group to fight it. After the battle, Elly, saddened at not being able to help them, takes a sword and cuts the palm of her hand, allowing her blood to drip into the mouth of the dying Sufal lying on the floor. The Sufal, listening to her, turns its head and passes away. Elly, channeling Sophia's words, admonishes the Wels gathered, reminding them of their humanity.

All the people mutated were taken in by Nisan where they received treatment with Taura's nanomachines, though not all could be restored to their human form. However, none of the people being treated reverted back to fighting or devouring each other for survival, something Fei attributes to Elly's presence.

Later, after Kahran Ramsus assassinates Cain, the Gazel Ministry uses the Gaetia Key, an artifact that manipulates the DNA of humans around the world, to turn a larger majority of the human population into Wels. This is done to collect flesh to reconstruct Deus. The combined howling of the new Wels causes Mahanon, Deus's location, to rise from the sea. Almost all of the Wels are absorbed into Deus after its awakening.

Etymology[]

The name "Wels" could be a reference to science fiction author H. G. Wells. His novel, The Time Machine, portrays two future branches of humanity: the docile Eloi of the surface, and the subterranean Morlocks who treat the Eloi as food stock. Their relationship has similarities to the exploitation of the surface humans by Solaris in Xenogears.

The name "Wels" may also be a phonetic allusion to Weltall (pronounced "velt-all", German for "universe" or "space"[1]).

The Skell model Verus from Xenoblade Chronicles X is originally named "Wels" in the Japanese version.
